My dear child:

A man raised his voice at me once across a boardroom table. I said nothing. Within a few years I owned the building he was renting.

Watch the man who stays calm when the room heats up. He’s not weak and he’s not slow. He’s simply learned that the man who loses his temper has handed you the only thing he truly controls. Anger feels like power. It’s actually the opposite. It’s a man telling the whole room he has run out of better moves.

I’ve never won an argument by raising my voice. I’ve won a hundred by lowering it, or by saying nothing at all and letting a foolish man keep talking.

Composure isn’t politeness. It’s leverage. The calm man sees three moves ahead while the loud one is still defending the last one.

So the next time you are provoked, wait just ONE breath longer than feels comfortable. Let the silence do the work. Most people can’t stand it, and that is exactly why it wins.

The strongest person in the room is almost always the quietest. Remember that.

One thing I'd tell my younger self: Every time I reacted, I lost ground. Every time I waited, I gained it.

From the bookshelf: “Meditations" by Marcus Aurelius. A man ran an empire and still had to remind himself, each morning, to stay calm.

A question to sit with: What would you do differently this week if you refused to react to anything for one full day? Reply and tell me how it went.

Yours sincerely,
